German Retro

I recently bought a bulk lot of furniture through an on-line auction simply because I liked the look of it. I think I'm going through a bit of a retro phase.

When it arrived I was even more thrilled as the furniture was so much better than the photos on the auction site. The furniture is really good quality, made of good quality woods and is just "cool"! At first I thought that maybe it was hand made because of its quality but when I looked closer at some of the items there appeared to be details that looked commercial.

Imagine my surprise when I found some of the items on the web and found out they were 1950s/1960s miniature furniture by a German firm called Crailsheimer. I still don't know much about the firm and still have some research to do but I thought I'd share some photos with you.

I have temporarily housed the items in my Bodo Hennig attic/house turning it into a retro holiday pad.

I don't have a lot of time for miniatures at the moment or for keeping up with blogs, mostly because my daughter is right in the thick of dance exams which she has been working towards all year. It is always a busy time with a lot of last minute practise. She sits one exam next Friday and one next Saturday.

I am hoping to do some more work on my sister's gallery this weekend. I'll post some pictures when I have something worth showing.

Have a great weekend.

  1. It looks good in this Bodo Hennig roombox/house, Sharee! I'm pretty sure the BH is much later than the Crailsheimer, but as it's also made of good wood, in similar tones, they look quite at home with each other.
Good luck to your daughter - I don't imagine that she will literally be "sitting" all the exams, will she? ;-)

    1. LOL - Jamie had better not be 'sitting' through her exams she had better be leaping and prancing her little heart out with all the lead up to them. When I bought the Bodo Hennig house the lady I got it from said she had bought it in Berlin about 7 or 8 years ago, so it is not that old, but I like the quality. I am not sure it is bright enough for a retro scene though, I might have to find a better house in the future. I haven't really seen any nice houses here in New Zealand though for the 50s 60s period. I might have to look at creating something myself.

  2. That is cute furniture, what scale is it in?

    1. Diane, it is hard to tell the exact scale of this furniture. As is often the case the scale is not true to the furniture we have today. I think they are all close to 1/12th scale. The seat size of the green set fits the measurements for 1/12th, although the seats are low. The wooden sideboard is almost over-sized. The white set could be slightly under 1/12th. I think a lot of it has to do with the furniture and the period they are based on, e.g. what fits into our homes today may have been too big for cottages in the past and furniture designed for grand buildings in the past would probably not fit through our doors!

  3. What a lovely find! That furniture looks like the "modern" stuff that was around when I was growing up! The kitchen pieces look very unique! What fun!

  4. Cara Sharee, un ottimo acquisto! E le immagini che hai postato rappresenta perfettamente l' arredamento delle case negli anni '50. Tipico il modello di frigo di quegli anni...
    Un abbraccio, Manu

  5. Hi Sharee! I love the way that you are collecting bits from here and there and finding later how clever you were in getting them! I love the look of this furniture and as Betsy has pointed out it looks like what I grew up with in Real Life, too! It is funny that I sure didn't think much about it at the time nor was I that enamored of it when we had it at home but NOW it is like milk and cookies! I love it! It gives me such a warm fuzzy feeling when I see it now! Dollhouse furniture was all over the place back then, scale was optional but the fun was endless
