Op-Shopping

I am sure I have mentioned before that I love op-shopping. I have not let myself spend much on myself lately because of the situation with my husband losing his job but last week I needed to fill in some time in town and I let myself do a bit of op-shopping.

I got myself a pair of near new shoes for about the price of a cappuccino from the Salvation Army shop.

At other op-shops I got the following, all for about NZ $12.

Lace Net Embroidery
Chocolat
Basic Steps for Weaving Cane Furniture
Woolen Baby Wrap
Tourist-type Russian Dolls
(I also got a folder of crochet know-how and patterns but I have not included these in the photo)

Over time I want to experiment with the lace net embroidery and the cane furniture in miniature. The woolen wrap I will cut up to make miniature blankets etc which I will edge and embroider. There is only two dolls as below and I may just use the bottoms as miniature planters once I have trimmed the top edge of them. As for the book Chocolat, that is my favourite film which I have watched many times but I have never read the book before. The felt toy book is from 1953 and has some lovely designs in it. Some of the simpler designs I will try to make in miniature but I will also probably make up some of the designs in their full size as well. I've always loved the old felt toys.

and yet more:

Little Brown Bird
Basketry the Easy Way
More Macrame
Basket Making Made Easy
Applique and embroidered table cloth

With this group I want to experiment with basketry and macrame in miniature. When I was quite young I remember doing both in full size. It will be fun trying to scale the techniques down into miniature. The Little Brown Bird book contains designs which combined make a large quilt using applique/embroidery/stitching and painting, with many of the designs containing birds. I love anything to do with birds. While I am not a quilter I thought I could take ideas from the book for miniature items. The table cloth I will cut up to use the applique and embroidery for miniature items and the cloth can be used to make miniature sheets.

So that was my op-shopping.

Finally, I couldn't resist a 960 page 1813/14 Girl's Realm Annual I saw on an on-line auction. I got it for NZ$3 plus postage. I couldn't believe my luck. The seller had described it as being in quite bad condition which may have put people off bidding, but I was happily surprised when I received it as it is not in that bad a condition at all, especially for a book that is 100 years old. I love flicking through these old annuals and they often have some lovely craft ideas in them as well as pictures of old fashions etc.

I definitely intend to make at least some little thing in miniature this weekend so check back with my blog in the next day or two.

Have a great weekend everybody.

I See A Mouse House

I see a mouse house in my future. Hopefully when you see the pictures of the tin I just bought you will see what I mean. This just begs to become a small scale mouse house.

Isn't it cute. It appears to be from 2008 (the labels says 'Best before August 2008') and originally held pink and white marshmallows. It was obviously intended as a Christmas gift as some mice have Santa costumes or Santa hats on and there are presents, candy canes, stockings, a Christmas pudding and even a couple of little mice smiling under some mistletoe. I love the story 'The Night Before Christmas' so I think I would work around that theme.

The tin is 31cm tall by 21cm wide.

The front.

The right side.

The left side.

The back.

Underneath

Of course I have other projects to do first and I already have a Christmas project on the go, so this will be put aside for now. I just had to share it with you though.

Hopefully I will be back in a day or two with a little Easter scene.

Bye for now.

A bit of this and bit of that...

AARRRHHH!!!  Typical.  First free weekend in weeks and I wake up Saturday morning with a full on dose of the flu my husband has had for the last couple of weeks. I spent yesterday in bed trying to shake it off. It didn't work so I figure I will at least get up and do a blog post today (Sunday), especially as I haven't done an entry for three weeks. I was really hoping to make something so I could have a show and tell but I'm afraid my head is a bit fuzzy so instead this post will just be about a bit of this.. and a bit of that...

My daughter Jamie loves it when I mention her on my blog (she keeps asking if she can have one of her own) and is especially happy when people mention her in their comments, so thank you to everyone who wished her well in her dance exams. I am happy to say Jamie passed her American Jazz Grade 4 dance exam with distinction and also did really well with her SLS (Stretch Leap Spin) exam getting 5 out of 5 stars. Below is a photo of Jamie after being presented with her SLS banner. Now we are working towards competitions in October and her teacher is putting on a large recital at the end of the year to celebrate 30 years of teaching. The life of a dance mum is never boring.

Also below is a photo of Jamie wearing a dress up costume for school last week. The costume was given to Jamie's grandmother (who grew up in England) when she was a little girl in the 1950s. It came from Germany. She has now passed it on to Jamie.

Jamie turns 11 later this month. Our birthdays are only 6 days apart. When Jamie turned 1 I was about to turn 40 so we had a big 40-1st birthday party. Now that Jamie is about to turn 11 I am about to turn?? Yes, for those quick to calculate, I'm heading for my big 50 this month. However, a 50-11th birthday doesn't sound quite right. I think I'll just let my birthday slide by this year!

Jamie wants to have a birthday party with an owl theme, so if I'm a bit quiet later this month you know what I will be doing.

On to miniatures, for those of you who follow Casey on her fabulous blog http://caseymini.blogspot.com
you will have seen her entries on weaving a rug. I recently saw two little looms on a local auction site and just had to get them to have a go. So far I have checked the boxes to make sure everything is there. Now I just need to get some cotton suitable for making a miniature woven rug.

Another recent purchase is a Bodo Hennig sewing machine. It is beautifully made with moving parts. The top small room in my vintage house 'The Laurels' is going to be a sewing room as the lady of the house makes beautiful dresses for the elite in order to be able to maintain and keep 'The Laurels' while she anxiously awaits her husband long over-due return from an overseas bird-discovery expedition.

Lately it seems a number of four legged inhabitants have been begging me for a home in my dolls houses.

First of all below is some bone china collie dogs found at a local antique shop. They are hoping to move into my Amersham house when I have restored it. To that end, I have ordered some reproduction papers.

Then another set of dogs caught my attention at the local SPCA op shop. I paid only NZ 50 cents for them. I sat them with my German furniture in my Bodo Hennig house and now they are refusing to move. Actually I think they can stay. I'll have to train the pup not to jump on the furniture though!

Then these two characters moved in to the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs cottage.

They are actually from a Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set, but I think from a later house than mine. The auction was for the seven dwarfs, the two animals, a lantern and some pick axes and shovels. Jamie loves my Snow White house and would like one of her own. When Jamie saw the seven dwarfs in the auction of course she wanted them. We therefore came to an arrangement to go halves in the auction and she would get the seven dwarfs and I would get the animals and the tools. Of course, now she wants us to build a residence for her dwarfs. Another thing on my to do list! Below are the tools outside the back of the Snow White cottage.

Then I found this comical miniature dog pulling along a big slipper. He has not feared the best over the years and has a slight lean. Poor thing, the least I could do for him was to take him home and find him a new residence where he could live out the rest of his life in comfort! He only cost a few cents at another op shop.

Actually I had a really good day going around the op shops the other day. Usually I am lucky to find anything of interest but the other day, along with the dogs, I also found some beautiful unfinished raised embroidery, a number of doilies that can be used for miniatures, some plastic utensils, a little pottery pot and a stone pot and a lovely piece of fabric with a miniature print. A good day at the op shops.

Finally, I bought an old tile from the local antique shop. I had been looking at them for some time and when I went in the other day there was only one left, sadly not in the best of condition. I am hoping to work in photoshop to fill in the edges and to create miniature floor tiles. Four of these tiles would create the floor tile design. I think it will make a lovely floor. Supposedly the original tiles came from a Lypiatt Park in Eastcombe, Gloucestershire.

Well it has taken a while for me to get my head around this entry and complete it and unfortunately my flu symptoms have not miraculously disappeared, so I think I will have a hot bath and then head back to bed with a lemon and honey drink for a while and play patience on my cellphone!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend. Happy September!

Family Weekend - & More Treasures

Well I don't have anything much to report as far as miniatures goes. Due to Anzac Day on Thursday and my office closing for the day on Friday, I had a four day weekend. I took the opportunity to pick up my 86 year old Mum and have her stay for a few days. We dropped her back to her home this afternoon. It was a lovely weekend with three generations under one roof.

Mum used to do miniatures with me back in the 1990s so she really enjoyed looking at what I was up to with my miniatures, both modern and vintage. She also sorted out a few of her miniatures and gave some to Jamie and some to me.

These are some pictures of some of the items she gave me.

On Saturday morning we took Mum into town to have a look at the shops, starting with the Hospice Shop where I found this lovely vintage souvenir doll for 20 cents.

I also picked up this Limoges brooch at the local antique shop earlier in the week. Thought it would be a lovely picture on a doll house wall.

I won an auction today for five sets of 1950s plastic dolls house furniture in their boxes being bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, dining room and sitting room.

I also have to confess to buying another vintage dollshouse. I won it tonight on an on-line auction. I am hoping it is a 1930s Amersham doll house but I won't really be able to tell until I have a good look at it when I pick it up. It is certainly not in its original state but it is a lovely little house. Unfortunately it is going to be a five hour drive to pick it up and a five hour drive home again so it may be a week or two before I can organise that.

I'd better stop watching the on-line auctions for a bit and start saving some more pennies. I've certainly treated myself to a few vintage treasures lately.

I'll post pictures of the house when I have collected it.

I'd better get on with the Selina Rose Gallery during the week. The good news is I have found something that removes the sticky tape residue on the side of the house. The bad news is it is painstakingly slow, so guess what I will be doing in my evenings.

I hope you've all had a good weekend. For some of you it is still the weekend. For me in New Zealand it is time to head to bed and get some beauty sleep before work tomorrow as it is now 10.30pm Sunday night.
